Lieutenant-General Yvan Blondin, a Montreal, QC native, enrolled in the Canadian Armed Forces in 1980. Upon completion of pilot training in 1982, he was assigned to VU32 Squadron in Shearwater, NS, to fly the venerable T33 aircraft. In 1986, following the Canadian acquisition of the CF18 fighter aircraft, he was selected for conversion and posted to the newly formed 433 Tactical Fighter Squadron in Bagotville, QC. Lieutenant-General Blondin would eventually serve with the two fighter squadrons in Bagotville, accumulating more than 3,000 flying hours in North America and Europe on various Canadian Forces aircraft.

As a staff officer, Lieutenant-General Blondin has served in various personnel related positions in NDHQ from 1993 to 2000. From 2002 to 2004, he was part of the Canadian staff in NORAD Headquarters in Colorado Springs. In 2006-2007, he deployed to Afghanistan as Director of Staff in NATO ISAF Headquarters. Following his tour in Kabul, he was assigned as Deputy Commander Force Generation at 1 Canadian Air Division in Winnipeg.

Lieutenant-General Blondin has held many command positions throughout his career, including Commanding Officer of 425 Tactical Fighter Squadron in Bagotville from 2000 to 2002; Commander of the Canadian CF18 Operational Force in Aviano, Italy, supporting NATO Forces in the former Yugoslavia in 2000-2001; Commander of 3 Wing Bagotville from 2004 to 2006; and Commander of 1 Canadian Air Division / Commander Canadian NORAD Region from 2009 to 2011. In 2011 he was appointed Deputy Commander of the Royal Canadian Air Force and, one year later, Commander of the Royal Canadian Air Force. Lieutenant-General Blondin left this prestigious position and retired from the Canadian Armed forces in July 2015.

He now lives in Hudson, Quebec, with his wife Jinny Lamoureux, a teacher at CEGEP de Valleyfield. He maintains links to the aerospace industry as a senior consultant and remains tied to his roots as Board President of the Quebec Veterans Foundation.

Lieutenant-General Blondin holds a BA Degree from the University of Manitoba and an MBA from the University of Phoenix in Arizona. He is a graduate of the Canadian Forces Command and Staff College and of the United States Air Force War College.

Le lieutenant-général Yvan Blondin, natif de Montréal, s’enrôle dans les Forces Armées Canadiennes en 1980. Après sa formation en pilotage, en 1982, il est affecté au 32e Escadron à Shearwater, en Nouvelle- Écosse, où il pilote des aéronefs T33. En 1986, lorsque le Canada fait l’acquisition d’avions de chasse CF18, il est choisi pour suivre l’instruction de conversion et est affecté à Bagotville au 433e Escadron d’appui tactique, nouvellement créé. En 2006 et 2007, il est en mission en Afghanistan, où il occupe le poste de directeur de l’état-major canadien au quartier général de la FIAS de l’OTAN. Au terme de sa mission à Kaboul, il est promu au rang de brigadier-général et nommé commandant adjoint responsable de la mise sur pied de la force de la 1ère Division aérienne du Canada, à Winnipeg.

Le lieutenant-général Blondin occupera plusieurs commandements au cours de sa carrière. Il est notamment commandant du 425e Escadron d’appui tactique, à Bagotville, de 2000 à 2002; commandant de la Force opérationnelle canadienne des CF18 à Aviano, en Italie, d’où il appuie les forces de l’OTAN en ex-Yougoslavie de 2000 à 2001; commandant de la 3e Escadre Bagotville, de 2004 à 2006; et commandant de la 1ère Division aérienne du Canada / commandant de la région canadienne du NORAD de 2009 à 2011. Il occupera les fonctions de commandant adjoint de l’Aviation Royale Canadienne de 2011 à 2012 avant de finalement occuper le poste le plus élevé de l’Aviation Royale Canadienne, commandant et chef d’état-major de 2012 à 2015. Il prend sa retraite des Forces Armées canadiennes en juillet 2015.

Il réside maintenant à Hudson, Québec, avec son épouse Jinny Lamoureux, professeur au CEGEP de Valleyfield. Il maintient des liens avec l’industrie aérospatiale comme consultant sénior et continue de servir ses compagnons d’arme comme Président du Conseil d’Administration de la Fondation Québécoise des Vétérans.

Le lieutenant-général Blondin détient un baccalauréat de l’université du Manitoba et un MBA de l’Université de Phoenix, en Arizona. Il est aussi diplômé du Collège d’état-major et de commandement des Forces canadiennes et du United States Air War College, Maxwell, Alabama.
